INSPIRE-SHE Scholarship: ₹80,000 a Year for Science Students in India

If you love physics, chemistry, mathematics or biology and want to build a career in research, the INSPIRE-SHE Scholarship is one of the best opportunities in India. Run by the Department of Science and Technology, SHE (Scholarship for Higher Education) encourages bright students to pursue basic and natural sciences instead of moving away to other fields. It gives generous financial support of ₹80,000 per year to 10,000 meritorious students annually.

What You Get

The scholarship provides ₹80,000 per annum, which includes a ₹20,000 mentorship/summer research grant meant to give students hands-on lab experience. Support is available for up to five years, covering B.Sc., B.S. and Integrated M.Sc./M.S. programmes. Payments are made through Direct Benefit Transfer, usually into a State Bank of India account in the scholar’s name.

Who is Eligible?

There are two main routes to qualify:

  • Top 1% in Class 12: Students who scored within the top one percent of their state or central board in Class 12 and are pursuing natural or basic science courses.
  • Top ranks in national exams: Students ranked within the top 10,000 in JEE (Advanced) or NEET who then choose to study natural and basic sciences.

Applicants are generally in the 17–22 age group. The scheme supports only pure sciences such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, geology and statistics. Engineering, medicine, computer science, biotechnology and most professional or vocational courses are not eligible.

How to Apply

Applications are accepted only through the official INSPIRE online portal (online-inspire.gov.in). The steps are:

  1. Register as a new user and activate your account through the email link.
  2. Log in and click “Apply for Scholarship”.
  3. Fill in your academic details and course information.
  4. Upload your mark sheets, the eligibility/endorsement certificate, and a copy of your SBI passbook.
  5. Submit the completed form before the deadline.

Documents Required

  • Class 12 mark sheet showing your board rank or percentage
  • Eligibility certificate confirming your top 1% or JEE/NEET rank
  • Admission proof for your science course
  • SBI savings account passbook (joint accounts and other banks are not accepted)

Why It Matters

Beyond the money, INSPIRE-SHE is a recognition of scientific talent and a stepping stone into research careers. The mentorship grant lets scholars work with senior scientists during summer breaks, which strengthens applications for higher studies later. For students committed to a research path, the combination of funding and exposure is hard to match.

Renewal each year depends on maintaining good academic performance, so consistency is key. Always confirm the current eligibility routes and application window on the official INSPIRE portal before applying.
