The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) is a central scheme that rewards talented students from economically weaker families and encourages them to continue studying up to Class 12. Selected students receive ₹12,000 per year (about ₹1,000 per month) from Class 9 through Class 12, which can be a real motivation to stay in school.
Who is Eligible?
NMMS is aimed at students studying in government, government-aided or local body schools. Key conditions include:
- Minimum 55% marks in Class 7 to appear for the exam (50% for SC/ST students).
- Minimum 55% in Class 8 to actually receive the scholarship (50% for SC/ST).
- Annual family income from all sources not exceeding ₹3.5 lakh.
Students from Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, fully residential government schools and private schools are not eligible, since the scheme targets students who need the most support.
The NMMS Exam
To win the scholarship, students appear for a state-level examination, usually taken in Class 8. The test has two parts:
- Mental Ability Test (MAT): around 90 multiple-choice questions on reasoning, pattern recognition and critical thinking.
- Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT): questions based on the science, social science and mathematics syllabus of Classes 7 and 8.
Merit lists are prepared state-wise, and each state has a fixed quota of scholarships. Exam dates vary by state, with many states holding the test between November and February.
How to Apply
The process has two stages. First, students register for the state NMMS examination through their school or the state education department’s portal. After qualifying, selected students complete the scholarship application on the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in) and upload the required documents so the money can be transferred by DBT.

Preparation Tips
Since the exam covers Class 7 and 8 syllabus plus reasoning, regular practice of previous years’ MAT and SAT papers is the best strategy. Focus on speed and accuracy in the mental ability section, as it is often the deciding factor. Because renewal each year depends on maintaining good marks and attendance, staying consistent matters as much as clearing the exam.
